SCI Cresson

Cell 6

Have to say, after visiting and photographing the abandoned SCI Cresson in Pennsylvania a few years ago, I was definitely scared straight! The facility started as a the Cresson Tuberculosis Sanatorium. As the need for such a facility faded, Cresson transitioned into a prison. It closed in 2013 due to the cost of maintenance. It was eventually purchased and converted in part to a hydroponic farm. During that transition they offered tours to history buffs and photographers.

Normally when I shoot urbex I lean heavily on my ultrawide, 7-14 (14-28mm) lens, but on this shoot I opted to shoot exclusively with my 17mm (34mm) prime lens. With that near normal field of view I focussed on relatively tight, intimate vignettes.

This is one of my favorites from the day.
