Independence Pass

Giving colorado some love

Independence Pass

I fell in love with the state of Colorado the first time I visited it in the late 1980s while on a business trip. My first impression was limited to the Colorado Springs area, where the company had an office, but the proximity to Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, and Cripple Creek was enough to make a lasting impression. I was not really into photography at the time, so the week-long business trip was business and tourism.

My next visit to CO was in 2004, when I ran in a relay across the country — San Francisco-to-Boston. 10 runners, 3,400 miles, 30 days. It was quite an adventure seeing the country at 8 miles per hour. On that relay, one of the most memorable legs I ran was a 6-7 mile stretch along Poudre Canyon Road into Fort Collins. But that’s a story for another Blog post.

In the years following, there were other trips to Colorado but none were for photography until 2015 when I signed up for my friend Rick Louis’ “Colorado Fall Color Tour.” Rick puts together an incredible tour through the state to view and photograph the golden aspens against the mountains. We hit iconic locations like Maroon Bells and Telluride, and were treated to some of Rick’s personal favorite locations. On the way to some of the iconic and favorite locations, we drove through Independence Pass and stopped for a few shots.

This wound up being one of my favorite images from that trip.
