A Magical Morning

…But a really cold one

Thacher Island in Sea Smoke, Rockport, MA

The stars are aligned. The temperatures have been unseasonably warm here in New England lately, but they are expected to drop to single digits on Saturday, with the wind-chill bringing the number down below zero — possibly -40°. That blast of cold air should shock the warmer ocean water into exhaling sea smoke over the surface.

I’m usually reluctant to go out to shoot sunrise, but this icy phenomenon is something I jump at the opportunity to capture, so I will be making my way to the coast early on Saturday morning!

The image above is the from a sea smoke excursion in the winter of 2016 on the coldest day since 1958. It was indeed a magical morning.
