Millstone Quarry

an unexpected highlight

Millstone Quarry, Barre VT

Home base for the Vermont trip was Barre, Vermont, located in the central part of the state. We picked that area mainly because peak fall colors are very unpredictable, and from a central location, we could drive in the direction the color was tracking. What we didn’t expect was that the best color — and one of the best locations — was right in our back yard.

Located in Barre, Millstone Quarry is, or was, one of several granite quarries in the area. It is now part of the Barre Town Forest and offers miles hiking and mountain biking trails with views of the granite walls, which include many granite carvings by local artists.

This view is from the road, photographed by reaching over the protective fence which prevents people from falling into the 600 foot deep pool. The trails themselves wind through the colorful trees and over the ridge.

Below is one of the cool granite carvings.

For the record, one company, Rock of Ages, still mines granite in that area.
