The Basin
An over-shot but a must-shoot attraction
Whenever I am in the the Lincoln-Woodstock area of New Hampshire — usually for family vacations — The Basin area is one of my go-to locations for a casual hour or two of leisurely landscape photography. About a half mile of the Pemigewasset River winds through the park, twisting, turning, and flowing over and between the rocks. It is a target-rich environment for river and waterfall photography. Seasonally, it is beautiful year-round, and especially so in the fall during peak foliage season. In winter it is magical, but be careful hiking in; the short trail from the parking lot is part of a snowmobile trail.
Of course, the marquee attraction in this area is The Basin itself. I’ve probably photographed this little bowl once a year over the past decade. It is definitely over-shot, but if you are there, it is tough to pass up, so it is a must-shoot. On vacation a couple of weeks ago, I was there, so I did. But this time it was much different.
This summer has been a particularly rainy one, meaning the rivers in New Hampshire have been flowing higher than normally for the height of summer. In fact, I have never seen water from the Pemi flowing through The Basin’s bowl more rapidly. So this time, The Basin was a ‘really must-shoot’ location.
Thanks for stopping by!
